Mason B. Fisher Interview

Introduction

In the last 15 years, music in video games has progressed by leaps and bounds. From the 8-bit MIDI tunes of Super Mario Brothers to the sweeping orchestral tracks of today’s PC games, titles like Baldur’s Gate, Icewind Dale, and Mafia have raised the bar considerably for PC games.

While game soundtracks like that for the Final Fantasy series have been popular in Japan for some time, it is only within the last few years that game soundtracks have really come into their own in America. This revolution in game music is being led by such noteworthy composers as Michael Hoenig (Baldur’s Gate), Inon Zur (BG2, IWD2), Robert L. Euvino (Stronghold), and Jeremy Soule (Total Annihilation, Icewind Dale, Dungeon Siege, Morrowind). Composers like these are ushering in a new era of PC game music.

Mason B. Fisher is one such composer, who after a long absence from the PC gaming scene has made a smash return this year with his original score for Age of Wonders II: The Wizard’s Throne, which has been praised up and down by critics for its rich depth and haunting melodies. AoW2’s soundtrack is surely only the first of many fine game compositions we’ll enjoy from Mason B. Fisher in the forthcoming years as he is currently very busy working on several new projects.

In this exclusive (and exhaustive!) five-part interview, HeavenGames explores mind and musical philosophies of a rising star in PC game music: Mason B. Fisher.
