At the end of the first act of The War of Redemption, Ferris Thule, a dwarven wizard in the employ of his majesty King Boroun, discovered the location of an ancient dwarven citadel that has remained virtualy untouched by the events of The Great Winnowing due to it's location in a secluded valley amidst a forbiding mountain chain. Now, however, two groups enfringe upon the ancient dwarven city, a tribe of orcs led by the mad wizard Kharasis and a legion of dark elves. Both factions seek to claim the mineral-rich Valley of Duaryl and the ancient city of Barrowduin for themselves. Many are the surprises and revelations which await Ferris Thule as he tries to locate the ancient bastion of dwarven might amidst the desolate frozen tiaga of the Phyren Mountains. |

This review comes from the now closed site aow2battleground.com. My review system there was a bit different, but I've tried to translate the ratings as good as I can.

This is the second part of the WoR campaign, and once again you have to lead the dwarves into battle against evil wizards.
The landscape is pretty and the story ok, but I must say it's a bit easy to win. The two other wizards doesn't even fight you...
It's still playable though, since there are a lot of hidden items to search for and a bunch of custom spirit quests, which makes things more fun.
Balance : 1
Balance is terrible. The other wizards doesn't even fight you! They stay hidden in the underground, and once you get there your have an army über enough to wipe them out easily.
Graphic details : 10
Looks great. Much time has been spent on decorating this map. The underground is beautiful.
Story/Instructions : 8
Pretty basic story, but the messages are long and well written. Two of the wizards don't have descriptions though.
Customization : 7
Many new items and heroes! For some reason a few of the default heroes/items has been kept.
Creativity : 6
Map layout is great and the event list is long. Two teleporters confused me some though, since I didn't see the reason for why they were there...
A few small bugs : There's an item called "cloak of ashes" which is a Head item with the picture of a sword, and when fighting some orcs to complete one of the quests, only one of the orcs has to be killed to complete the quest.
Fun : 5
Not much fighting takes place, other than when you fight indies for items that are hidden in the underground. Some of these items are not worth fighting for either... E.g., it's not fun to have to kill 12 level two and three creatures only to find an item that gives you Magic bolts....

Playability: 4
Fun single-player map in the same vein as part one.
Balance: 3
The two AI wizards are too timid and as with part one it can be hard to decide where your troops are most needed.
Creativity: 4
Some good ideas, especially the non-random shrine quests are nice. Custom wizards, heroes and items.
Map Design: 4
Very nice map. But playing as dwarves, it's easy to bypass the "impassable" mountains to reach the legendary Dwarf city.
Story/Instructions: 4
Nice background story, but directions are a bit more fuzzy than in part one and there's also more spelling/typing errors.
Additional Comments:
This map has the same strengths and weaknesses as the first map. Sadly it's also the last in what should have been a series of seven maps.
With some more tweaking and playtesting these maps could have been classics. |
