The earth erupted, spewing forth its dead, and the halflings of Nurmendale watched as their farms and cities were destroyed by a volcanic disaster and an army of animated corpses. The great scar in the earth clogged the rivers, changing the once fertile lands into poisonous swamplands, Embittered and helpless to save their possessions, the Halflings were not quick to trust the two strangers which approached to take their lands. |

Death Swamp -- Review
Playability (3/5)
(+) All cities are reasonably guarded, as are sites, so there are things to do from the beginning.
(+) Some units attack, requiring caution in expansion.
(+) Several cities and sites to take, with dungeons in out-of-the-way places, keeping the players busy and interested.
(+) Map does not use boats nor require boats, so the AI is not restricted by this.
(-) AI does not put up much of a challenge (set game to hardest but when I got to AI player's capital city, he had little to show for it. This still makes it a good novice map, as rated by the author.
(-) A few powerful cities, once found, could degenerate future games into one "best" way to play the map.
(-) AI can not take advantage of ruined structures and cities.
Balance (5/5)
(+) Map is basically a "mirrored map," with some minor differences keep it from feeling too much like one. Starting positions are well matched.
(+) Starting units, spells, and resources are well matched.
(+) Independent races (Halflings, Undead) seem to favor the Elves, but don't since no Halflings can be bought. Elves can maintain Halfling cities easier, but Undead cities harder, and Draconians have equal difficulty/ease on both -- creating a different yet balanced result.
(+) Racial differences are well blended, with the fast Elven race on one side and a haste-capable Air wizard on the other. Also, Draconian and Elven units cost about the same and play well against each other.
(?) Elves start with 30 more mana than the Draconians (not sure why, but not enough to affect the game).
Creativity (3/5)
(+) Mirrored maps can be the least creative of map designs, though they are easy to balance. This map does have enough variations in design to keep it from looking like one side was flipped to make the other.
(+) Map graphics are creatively applied.
(-) Story concept is original and interesting, but needs to be developed more.
(-) Events are few and would not be missed if left out.
(-) Map is just a basic, 2-player, mirrored map.
Map Design (4/5)
a) Graphic use (5/5)
(+) Nicely done with many details added, including such things as holy woods (just a few), mushroom fields, cracks beneath vegetation, etc.
(+) Good use of terrain to divide map into sections.
(+) Good use of elevation.
(+) Map has a nice "swampy" feel to it.
(+) The area between Halfling and Undead seems to have a history to it, with destroyed cities and structures, and haunted cities.
(-) Air node/snow landscape does not quite blend in…maybe if it had some mountains around it? Snow does not seem necessary.
b) Placement of Objects (2/5)
(+) A few hidden specials and surprises (don't want to spoil it).
(+) A few dungeons, but not many; also some free (unguarded) magic items on the ground.
(+) A few signs to add a nice touch.
(-) Only two scripts, which would not be missed too much if not included.
Story/Instructions (2/5)
(+) The map does have a story that fits the map.
(+) Instructions are embedded within the story.
(+/-) I like the background story, but it stops short with no explanation as to why the two "visitors" came to this place.
(-)The background would be a good lead-in to the Undead's role in the game, but since the Undead is a "minor" independent player, the story seems to separate from the game.
(-) No sub-plots (though it is a small map).
(-) No messages inside the game to denote special events or accomplishments.
(-) The "visitors" start out in established cities, rather than just coming into the picture.
Summary Comments:
This is the kind of map you want to like, but needs a few tweaks to encourage variety in repeat game play. The map in single-player mode is definately for novice players, since the AI does not do well. Novice players may find that the map supports plenty of game strategy options and replayability versus other novice players.

Seemed pretty balanced. Its hard at the beginning cause there's a lot of independants, but its doable, and it works well for pbem. |
