For a brief moment, all of Celil Kingdom was struck blind by a flash of white light. When their vision returned, the world they saw was . . . different. A hellish mockery of their beloved Kingdom, teeming with monsters. Hungry monsters.

A 'lucky' few must now answer to a sorceress named Abigail, flock to her small bastion of civilization, and make a stand against the most terrible monster of them all.

---------

Alright, now that we got the important stuff out of the way, here's a little info on this map. Normally, this might go in a readme, but I don't want to make one so it goes here. This is my humble offering to Magog's 1.4 mapmaking competition, and despite coming in last, it seems to have been pretty well-received. I took the judges' feedback to heart with this, and made a few changes based on it. It's still largely the same map the judges played, but now events should work better, and the story should flow more easily. It's also easier to get ahold of certain heroes. And I added ONE new hero that wasn't in the contest version. It should be pretty obvious which one...

Zombie Stories is also my first attempt at writing a serious storyline for a map. The judges seem to like it. Be happy to hear what you all think. :)

A classic...
This is a must-play for everybody interested in AoW-sm!

Balance: 5
The map is challenging and keeps the player on their toes!

Creativity: 5
It's been a long while since I have been this immersed in a single player map. The character building was extraordinarily done and this makes it a map everybody MUST play. This is not just very good, it is simply brilliant.

Map Design: 5
It's made with great care and empathy! A lot of feeling went into this map and it definately payed off! I realised this from day one as you start the lonely journey with Thorme. The terrain adds greatly to the atmosphere!

It's dark, sinister and mysterious!

Story/Instructions: 5
Somebody claiming that AoW-sm mapmaking is 'just a game', is definately proven wrong here. It is an art and you are inside this interactive and captivating novel that is written by master storyteller (sitting by the fire and telling a story that chills you to the bone).

When I was judging for the competition, I had a hard time deciding between the Grolls map and this one. In a way, it was flipping a coin.
;)

I am very impressed by this map and I hope that Psykitty will make a sequal one day!

Ah... I don't know. :( Do you have trouble playing any other post-1.4 maps, or maps that are otherwise pretty graphically detailed? I'm afraid I can't be much help, I'm not a tech person... :(

very interesting, exciting. Unfortunately,i haven't had the pleasure to see it completely because of the heroes i lost at the beginning!

rat_peddler It took awhile to realize this isn't a normal scenario. You are supposed to be suffering loses, etc... I ended up with one dominant hero that pretty much carried the day. I would rate similiar to others.

I am not sure I like the hero items that have so many disads as advantages. It takes awhile to figure out how to best equip them thought!

It took me about 70 turns to win (and that was after figuring out how to save the sandworm).

This scenario provides a superb gaming experience in a very special scenario. The best map I know.

The story, which drives the scenario, is gripping; the heroes and items are all custom and the atmosphere excellent. The map stays exciting for a long time (for me about 50 turns).

Map design and creativity help the AI to do some awesome moves. I chased the last moving heroine of the AI with five heroes (one with "drain will" and "dominate", so the AI knew what I was up to...) for at least 10 turns. She was so damned fast and knew how to go where I could not (so easily). That was great fun.

Balance: 4
The human player starts at a weak and (seemingly) hopeless position. So right at the beginning a very careful exploration is recommended. Due to nice heroes and well-balanced items (with clever weaknesses and slots to use them) the player needs a long time to really rule the map. Very appropriate city limitations add to the balance.

Only a few, minor drawbacks:
One AI defeated the other AI in the middle of the game. This was a little drawback and could be improved.

The remaining AI should get access to more resources later in the game to prevent it from running out of gold and mana.

Creativity: 5
There is beauty in the chaos. Lots of eye-candy can be found here, without clutter. The best use of underground entrances ever! Bow down before the mighty volcano! The sewers are simply beautiful (but please, please update with a little more things to explore). The scenery is so nice and clever arranged, that it always gives actual or at least the impression of depth, which is so hard to achieve in AoW:SM.

Map Design: 5
In my opinion, this map has a very strange mixture of very good and less good.

The good is actually "THE BEST" map design I have ever experienced. Psykitty has many most beautiful and unique areas in the map. They add to the atmosphere greatly. (The good areas (90% of the map) are so good, that the few drawbacks cannot lower the score).

Only a few areas, which are irrelevant to game play, are less beautiful or useful. Most of them match the story, but nevertheless could be improved. Maybe they offer an opportunity to add even more depth to the map in an update?...

Story/Instructions: 5
The story is built around the heroes and has very nice and surprising twists. It is very gripping and makes exploration great fun. I could even imagine it as a story in a book.

A few of the events do not trigger properly or use fixed hero names. This was no real problem and could easily be updated (by changing the perspective of the narrator, for instance).

Additional Comments:
And all this in approx. 100 KB! The map runs smoothly on my old notebook (PIII 600, 512 MB)! Special thanks for that!!!
I would like to see this as the beginning of a campaign. It was nice to see most of the enemy and independent heroes to change sides with a little convincing from my original heroes, just to become big friends after that ;-) (Even a god? joined to form "the glorious 10").

A true masterpiece.

Thank you very much, Psykitty.

Only maps that force you to the limits of your strategic abilities get a 5 from me ,-) Surely not this one, but the different way of playing of this map made me almost make an exception ;-
) almost ;-) Liked the use of heroes very much!!
But I got very angry when me sandworm died - probably due to a patch bug or whatever! see comments.

Balance: 5
meaningless.

Brilliant!!!! A sinister overwhelming atmosphere, I loved it !!

Map Design: 4
Ok, not outstanding but very good! Very dark, very evil, very mysterious.

Story/Instructions: 5
Very good hero stories. Had I only disbanded Sechmette and the other hero earlier instead of letting them stand and wait stupidly in their balloon in the fire Area with all the other troops, Argghhh!

Additional Comments:
Some of the new stuff (monsters) from the 1.4 patch seem not to work properly I assume.
I bought that damn good sandworm for 1000 bucks, It did a very good jop of kicking cloaced man´s ass, and then, it simply died from one turn to the next (with more than 80 HP). No way of avoiding it, I loaded an earlier Savegame, it happend everytime.

Not sure how to grade this for a single player map, but its not too easy, not too hard so I guess its good.

Very creative, the whole thing has the feel of somthing lovingly crafted.

Map Design: 5
Superb looking map. Very creepy looking, with some very nice effects and terrain.

Story/Instructions: 5
Great storyline, keeps you interested. Nice detail on the heros and items.

Additional Comments:
Amazing map! It was great fun to play.
I also had a sandworm problem, but this is not a fault with the map. It seems, due to it's massive health(maybe more than some game functions allow), the game somtimes thinks it has only 1 hp. Several times i've auto battled with it and it dies to like a couple of halflings or somthing.
