Brave New World v2.0

Author File Description

It has been one year and one day since the brave new world v1.0 was made available. It was definitely time for an update! And after approximately 10-11 months of working on this, I now feel it is ready for release. There has been a ton of content added which I hope BNW players will enjoy. A fixed version of BNW 1.0 is also included in this package which is essentially the v1.1 version which had been making its way thru cyberspace. The only changes to this version are necessary ones in the unit bodies section of the editor so some fixed ILBs are set up properly. I felt it important that this should be included as well.

For players unfamiliar with the original, I should explain that this is a mod which places a great emphasis on heroes. Developing your heroes is an extremely important aspect of game-play and if you do so you will find they are capable of great deeds. This time around, as well as having distinctive portraits, each hero also has a unique body graphic and gone is the generic rider-type for each race. Expect to battle with great looking heroes who smoothly jog around the battlefield with very fluid and realistic animations.

This mod also is very much a tactical combat mod. The battles you have to fight are much more difficult than in the normal game and you will have to defeat powerful creatures as you struggle to expand your empire.

As players of the original might expect, there are many new and exciting creatures which have been added. Some are beautiful while some are bizarre, and still others are downright scary!

You can also expect to find many new artifacts, new map structures, changes to spells and abilities (plus a few new ones) and much, much more!

Finally I will just say that the mod comes with an easy install (same as the original) and this time around we have included some good documentation for you with illustrated tables and lots of information.

So prepare thyself brave one, for the new world beckons!

Hi Banality,

I just want to thank you very much for the nice review. After the recent hatchet job done here by the New Arsenal mod-makers brother, I was actually kind of wishing I had never made this mod. So it's very nice to hear that someone out there does enjoy it. Thanks a lot!

The only thing I would ask though, is that any reviewers of this mod don't specifically refer to another mod in a negative manner. I know you weren't doing so in a mean spirited way, but I just don't feel it's neccessary to do this.

I hope you understand and again thank you very much!

Banality Dear Kirky,

You are absolutely right. I should respect the time and effort ALL mod makers put in. They are all doing a great job.

The animations on your new units is unbelievable by the way, better than the original units imo. What would really make this mod complete would be descriptions for every unit but I realise that would be a lot of work so I don't really expect it. :)

Snsnowman Easily the best mod available, by far! So much content. The unit graphics are fantastic, and the gameplay is better than ever. AOW:SM has been completely revitalized by your work (and the work of the v. 1.4 patch crew).

I was hoping you might share how to assign the specific unit graphics to a particular hero. You've done an incredible job matching the new, customized hero bodies with the faces, but I'd like to add a few more of my own to make additional heroes. For example, let's say I want to have a cave troll picture as an orc hero assigned to a cave troll unit body -- are you willing to divulge your secrets?

Thanks in advance, and we all appreciate your quality efforts. Beautiful job!

Hi Snsnowman,

Thanks a lot for the very nice comments! :)

I am happy to try to explain how to assign a unit graphic to a particular hero, though like many things, explaining it is probably more difficult than actually doing it (hehe), but I'll try!

Which body graphic a hero uses is determined in the HEROES/RESOURCES section of the editor. So when you create a new hero in the HEROES/LIBRARY section it will use the highest numbered resource (or the one furthest down the list) to determine the body graphic and base stats and abilities of the hero you create based on class and race.

So for example, let's say you were to create a new orc warrior the normal way, by double clicking a blank square in the HEROES/LIBRARY section and picking its race, class etc. This hero would use the same body graphic as the hero Wazz does, because if you look in the HEROES/RESOURCES section you will see that this is the highest numbered resource for orc warriors. So if you want a orc warrior to use a new resource, you would create one in an index which is after this one.

Here's a step by step guide to doing this (I will use an orc warrior as an example):

Start the editor and select RESOURCES then EDIT from the menu up top. Open the HEROES tab then RESOURCES. Scroll down to where you see the new orc heroes and select a hero of the same class as the new one you want to create and select EDIT/COPY. Now PASTE into an empty index after the original (you can also use CTRL-C plus CTRL-V for this). Open the new resource and click the CHANGE button and then select whatever body graphic you want to use for this hero. Make any changes you wish to the base stats and abilities and click OK.

Now select the HEROES/LIBRARY tab and open an empty index. Select the heroes race and class etc. and click the change button to choose which portrait this hero will use. There are many additional portraits available in BNW as well as UPATCH ones. Go ahead and use the 30 points available to make additional changes to the hero and select OK.

In the top left menu select FILE then SAVE and the new resource set with your new hero should be ready. I would of course recommend backing up the BNW 2.0 Folder in the USER/RESOURCES folder before doing any of this.

If you have any problems just send me an e-mail and I'll set this up for you.

Kyrion Hi everyone! First of all I wanna congratulate the maker of this mod - its awesome! however I have some play issues regarding this mod. Everything works fine in the editor, but when I try to play the scenario, the game uses its old resources (the 1.4 patch resources)- that means old wizard and hero portraits and no new racial units that have been included in BNW. I have patch 1.3 and 1.4 installed and the installation of BNW 2.0 worked just fine too. Any ideas on what the problem might be? I'd appreciate suggestions. THX!!!!
Kyrion forgot to mention: i've patched a crack on the game. could this have something to do with my problem?

Hi Kyrion,

Thanks for the comments and the problems you are having are most assuredly related to the last thing you mentioned. Someone else was also doing the same thing I believe you are.

Please send an e-mail to:

and explain all the procedures you have done in setting up this mod and the patch and I will get you set up correctly.

Thank you.

Snsnowman Kirky,

Your hero units tutorial was great. My newly added units work as hoped. You're a true asset to the AOW community with your creative mod content and willingness to assist others.

With heartfelt gratitude...!
night_shade78 Hi Kirky Picardo,

I recently downloaded Brave New World and as youve been told over and over its great. Ive played many Mods and this is one of the best ive seen. Ive even learned to create new heros with your help. I was wondering if you can tell me how to add new pictures to the hero resources? Thanks

Hi Morphem,

Thank you very much for the nice review. Since the mod has been out I have been playing it a lot and I do make some adjustments here and there when I feel it will improve things, as well as fixing any mistakes that are discovered. However, the RPG style game-play of BNW will always remain part of this mod. I just find this to be a lot of fun and am always happy to hear when someone else enjoys it as well. :)

I am curious as to what mods you have tested by the way. Are these mods from the original Age of Wonders or other games maybe?

Thanks a lot!

Hi night_shade78,

Thank you also for your comments. There are a few ways to add portraits to a mod. I believe the best way is to put 180x220 bmp images into an ILB file. You can do this by adding them to an existing ILB file or creating a new one.

So for example, if you had a couple hero portraits you wanted to add to BNW you could open the NB_HeroPortraits.ILB file located in Age of Wonders Shadow Magic/Images/Portraits by double clicking it. You would then select OPEN IMAGE from the menu up top and browse to your hero image and select it. A box will pop up asking you OPEN IMAGE AS, select PICTURE (16bpp) and then for GRAB MODE select SINGLE then GRAB. To the right you will see the image and in the box that appears in the middle with the name of image select ADD and then select FILE then SAVE LIBRARY from the menu at the top left.

If you want to make your own ILB file of hero images you can put all your hero images into a folder with no other picture files then run ILEd.exe located in your main Shadow Magic folder. From the menu up top select BATCH then NEW BATCH and browse to the folder with your hero images. For GENERAL SETTINGS I would uncheck USE PREVIOUS SAMPLE SETTINGS and the other settings depend on the situation such as if you have numbered your images for INDEXED FILES ONLY etc. For PICTURE TYPE select PICTURE (16bpp) then type in the file name you want under IMAGE LIBRARY and select RUN. When the new box pops up select GRAB and for GRAB MODE select SINGLE as before and the new ILB file will be created with your hero images.

Finally, you now run the editor and in the HEROES/FACES section select an empty index by double clicking it then in the box that pops up select EMPTY and you see the little button appear and by selecting that you can browse to your ILB file and select the hero face. From here you can then follow the steps which I believe you already have done to set up your new hero portrait.

Thanks guys.
