It has been one year and one day since the brave new world v1.0 was made available. It was definitely time for an update! And after approximately 10-11 months of working on this, I now feel it is ready for release. There has been a ton of content added which I hope BNW players will enjoy. A fixed version of BNW 1.0 is also included in this package which is essentially the v1.1 version which had been making its way thru cyberspace. The only changes to this version are necessary ones in the unit bodies section of the editor so some fixed ILBs are set up properly. I felt it important that this should be included as well.

For players unfamiliar with the original, I should explain that this is a mod which places a great emphasis on heroes. Developing your heroes is an extremely important aspect of game-play and if you do so you will find they are capable of great deeds. This time around, as well as having distinctive portraits, each hero also has a unique body graphic and gone is the generic rider-type for each race. Expect to battle with great looking heroes who smoothly jog around the battlefield with very fluid and realistic animations.

This mod also is very much a tactical combat mod. The battles you have to fight are much more difficult than in the normal game and you will have to defeat powerful creatures as you struggle to expand your empire.

As players of the original might expect, there are many new and exciting creatures which have been added. Some are beautiful while some are bizarre, and still others are downright scary!

You can also expect to find many new artifacts, new map structures, changes to spells and abilities (plus a few new ones) and much, much more!

Finally I will just say that the mod comes with an easy install (same as the original) and this time around we have included some good documentation for you with illustrated tables and lots of information.

So prepare thyself brave one, for the new world beckons!

BNW 2.5 seems excellent, as was expected; especially liking the towers turning into proper "forts" etc., fun! Thank you so much! Still, one thing bothers me quite a bit... one of my favorite things about extensively playing 2.4 was an almost _complete_ elimination of the boring old hero gfx (= by this I specifically the animated units on the map), but out of the about 15 heroes (friend and foe) we've seen
in the multiplayer game that we are presently playing with 2.5, only one (!) has been new
(= an ultracool -looking djinni-hero!), and all the 14 other ones have been the same horrible ones we've all been looking at for about 4 or 5 years! This sucks so much that we are tempted to switch back to 2.4 because of it. I know you aren't intentionally behind this, as instead you are _increasing_ the amount of heroes in the game, so maybe the 2.5 installer is somehow buggy? Or is it just my machine? I mean, 2.4 has been working fantastically, without fail, and the setup options have "2.5" chosen, so I just don't understand why only sh*t heroes are popping up again! All the other units, (II, SM, old BNW and new BNW) work great. Also, for the first session, some minor sfx (= unit selection, button clicks, etc.) went
a-miss on my machine, but not my mate's...
but now they work for me, too. Shame about
the hero gfx: any ideas?

Hi Aylsham,

Well I can tell you that the 2.5 version does nothing that would lead you to then have heroes using the "boring, horrible and old gfx that you have been looking at for 4 to 5 years", haha! It actually adds even more unique heroes.

If you are playing a custom map made under the default ruleset with BNW (be it 2.0, 2.4 or 2.5) any custom heroes the mapmaker added for his/her map will use the default hero gfx from the normal game. This was done intentionally as they are generic in nature and can be used for either male or female heroes (even though they do seem more male than female in my opinion). The BNW hero gfx are more unique and personalized for specific look and sex. So I did not want someone playing a map made for default rules with BNW having a hero gfx which did not match that hero. This is why the default generic body types are still included but are not used for the BNW heroes themselves. Only one hero in BNW still uses the default gfx: Xeron, the shadow demon paladin. The rest all use a unique gfx.

So if you are playing a custom map that has a lot of custom heroes in it that the mapmaker added that would explain why most of the ones you are seeing still use the default gfx. For any map that uses the default heroes themselves you would of course get the unique body gfx from BNW. Meaning Arcos looks like Arcos in BNW, Belendor looks like Belendor from BNW etc.

Now if you are for example playing a random map and seeing default hero gfx then something is wrong and you are not setup properly.

I will say that BNW 2.5 is an addon and does require that 2.0 is already installed. Also, as with any mod your game must be properly patched to 1.4. This means your exe version will be 1.3 as well.

Aylsham Hello again!

Don't get me wrong, I don't wanna imply that you'd ever take a step backward in what has easliy become my all-time favorite game = BNW in all its versions... I credit Triumph Studios mostly on an "inspired by" level! ;) I was just wondering if the install had failed.

Cuz, again, no way do I wanna be looking at
a "stoic man on a common-breed horse", if
I could also be recruiting a "sultry
high-elf matriarch on a crimson-violet
phoenix", instead! (Not that I'd ever get
that lucky.)

The heroes units are some of our favorite features in the game, so I guess I just got really worried. If it were the priests reverting back to their carbon copied former states, I'd be annoyed, sure, but not totally freaked out! :)

In the end, how the heroes showed up in our game was an odd mix of (mostly) the old and some new. It all happened "normally" (ie. seemingly randomly), so it was hard to see the old heroes being "hardwired" into the custom scenario, but I guess they must have been!
(The creator certainly hasn't done anything interesting with them, renamed them at the most!)

It was just that ALL the custom scenarios we played with BNW 2.4 (after the "go to editor, resave" trick) worked fine, with almost NO
old heroes, so this time, my eyebrows were raised by increasing increments every time an orange-hooded wolf-rider applied for a job.

To confirm the situtation, I now started a 2.5 random scenario for test purposes, and sure enough, all the 8 heroes I saw were gloriously BNW! Phew! So the install should be alright, after all...

Hi Kirky,

I am sorry that I didn't write for a long time.

I am playing the 2.5 version that you provided, thank you it's great.

I Loved the new heroes especially hero(centaur type) named kira I think. also I loved a huge giant given me by magic quest (sea…)

Something that I didn't loved or maybe I need to get use to it, is the buildings graphic's that similar to heroes of might and magic.

Just wanted to add my support
to your "cause": I think I speak
for the many, many (mostly nameless)
visitors who check back to these pages
just to see if you've commented on BNW
or, best of all, come up with a new

So if you feel your strength or spirits
flagging at times, I want you to know
that there are many of us that are
REALLY grateful for what you're doing
for our favorite game. Because of you,
and ONLY because of you (I'd stopped
playing even 1.4 before your mod came
along!) we are now getting hundreds of
hours of enjoyment again!

I often compare you to the whole WOG-movement for HOMM 3, and that mod hasn't been updated for over 2.5 years!

So whatever you do, please don't start producing vaporware! :) If you have to take your time, or release smaller updates, that
is fine, but I hope you won't leave us too soon, "Huxley"! Everything about BNW is so glorious, so absolutely magnificent!

Hi Aylsham,

Even though I only posted here a short time ago, I felt I had to post again to say thank you very much for the super nice comments (and thanks again to Wusong as well).

I want to quickly add that I am trying very hard to take your advice about "vaporware". I guess sometimes when you are shooting for the moon, it's easy to miss the mark and instead end up lost in space, lol. So instead of trying to come up with a completely 100% finished version of the mod before making it available, maybe just concentrating on getting a good playable update as soon as I can would be better. There is a lot of really cool stuff that is in this new version, and to not have it available to people who are interested is a bit goofy really. I can always continue to work on it and make smaller updates later on as you suggest.

So hopefully when next I post there will be something new for you to play as well.
