Playability: 3
For the first time ever on a Kevin King map, I had some fun playing it!
Balance: 3
With all AI races set to Emperor it was still very easy to win, so this map is probably only suitable for novices. However, that is an area of the market that needs catering for!
Creativity: 1
No originality here. Still dividing a map up into square boxes with straight lines of mountains, one race in each box, just the same mountain tile repeated all across the map. Acres and acres of the same tree tiles, with paths through. A few red flowers have appeared in the grassland forests - this is definitely progress! :-P
The same stacks of indies (four human swordsmen, or four human crossbowmen plus four human halberdiers) anywhere on the map. This is where I fundamentally disagree with mapmakers that say every map should be made from scratch, I believe that a good RMG makes a better basis for a map, unless you're prepared to devote months of your life to it (and Kevin King obviously isn't prepared to devote months to it)
Map Design: 2
The other Kevin King maps I've played have been really bad, no fun at all to play, but at least this one had a few surprises. The stack of 8 indies in the watchtowers, which you would expect to be set to guard, were set to guard area. It was amusing to be ambushed once, but of course after it happened once you knew it was going to happen everywhere on the map. Lots of heroes wandering around with lots of items and a strong supporting stack. Some customised diplomacy messages. Some aspects were very sloppy, such as King Arthor not having any spheres assigned, and the English/grammar was appalling. However, bearing in mind how dire the other maps were, this map is definitely an improvement
Story/Instructions: 1
Very poor English and grammar (and nothing to do with LotR)
Additional Comments:
Kevin King insists on password protecting his maps, which is a pity, as the only way to find out whether it's diabolically bad is to play it. Most people wouldn't be prepared to do that. This map is a step in the right direction, with a few red flowers starting to appear amongst the endless forests, but there is still a long way to go before any of his maps are nominated for the Best Map Ever Awards. Why he can't run his stories through a spell-checker, or ask an adult to check them, I don't know |
