Tolkien's Middle Earth, extra large for extra fun. More than 60 cities for 8 players, in rich detail colored with a bit of fantasy. Though many city names are fictional, you will find all main cities from the Shire to Mordor, from Eriador to Gondor. Check out the map for more details.

This review comes from the now closed site aow2battleground.com. My review system there was a bit different, but I've tried to translate the ratings as good as I can.
Map author : Freya, Map size : XL, Rating : 38,0%
One of two recently released Middle earth maps. The other one is simply called "Middle earth" (made by someone called mikd990) and it looked terrible in the editor, so I decided that it was an MP map just so that I didn't have to play it :).
This one though looks pretty nice, but need a lot more work to get balanced and more customization. For single play I recommend that you play as Saruman or Aragorn, as the other wizards get too much gold an have easily defended positions.
Suggestion : wait for Mister Pickles Middle earth map instead.
Balance : 3
Not very balanced. The two wizards located in the middle of the map are very hard to play as, while the others are very easy since they get a lot of gold early in the game.
Graphic details : 7
This map actually looks pretty good. The underground need some more work though...
Story/Instructions : 1
None.
Customization : 2
The wizards are custom. I don't understand why no heroes are added, it's not that hard to take some characters from the book and make them into heroes, is it?
Creativity : 5
More work can really be done to this one.
Fun : 4
Not very fun, mostly because there's no story at all. One funny thing though (if you have a bad sense of humor like me), when playing as Saruman I got the default alliance message from Sauron : "Greetings, it's a pleasure to meet you. Let's share this land!".
That really sounds like the most evil person in the world, doesn't it? :)

Playability: 5
Haven't tried many races but seems to play well from Galadriel and Aragon.
Balance: 4
Need to move very quickly in the beginning or you will get clobbered.
Creativity: 5
Nice implementation with lots of detail.
Map Design: 5
Beautiful.
Story/Instructions: 3
Story tie is only the location and wizard names but still works for me. No 'ring' plot.
Additional Comments:
Challening, huge world. This isn't for someone who wants to recreate the ring quest but if you like a "fun conquer the world" with long play time in a map that is faithful to middle earth (aside from the addition of many more cities), it is worth the time.

Playability: 3
I think that it would probably work OK as a multi-player map but it's not very interesting as a single-player map.
Balance: 3
All eight sides are about the same, which is good for a multi-player map but not good for single-player or coop.
Creativity: 3
Too many liberties were taken with Lord of the Rings, such as having Eol the Dark Elf as one of the eight wizards (Why do people think they need to use all eight slots on every map?) and inventing many additional towns. Some more creative solutions to the problems of bringing LotR to AoW2 might have been better.
Map Design: 3
Attractive but not very accurate.
Story/Instructions: 2
Not much events or color added in; little feel of Lord of the Rings.
Additional Comments:
This is the best of the early Middle-Earth maps. As others have mentioned, this is not attempting to re-create the War of the Ring. But Arcana's map (in early 2003) is the same basic concept as this map but more accurate to Tolkien.

''with a bit of fantasy'' ?
This is really written down by a mad!
Eol?In the third age?I thought he died in the first.
And there are heavy mistakes in the map as well!
If Tolkien was still alive, he would have a nervous breakdown![Edited on 10/03/04 @ 12:18 PM]
