Since time immemorial the shire had been a peaceful place, and people had been busily building their homes, their loves and their empires. Yahu was a reasonably popular leader, despite strong obsessions for beautiful young ladies, cricket and lobster thermidor, which had caused raised eyebrows in a few well-informed quarters. The most pressing concern on the political agenda had been whether they were over-fishing the nearby waters, and whether stocks of Babelfish would hold out for future generations

Although it was known that there were a few dark elf and undead villages in the vicinity, the evil folk were rarely seen, as they tended to prefer the hours of darkness for scouting. However, recently a dark and festering cancer had started to grow in the midst of this happy and pleasant land, an area of blackness surrounded by mountains, which none of Yahu's scouts had ever returned from alive

A feeling of unease had started to become more prevalent amongst the ordinary people of the shire, people were stocking up on food and water, fortifying their houses with more and more bolts. The time had come for Yahu to take decisive action against this looming, lurking, ominous evil presence....

In general I like small single-player maps. This one is pretty good, but drags on quite a long time to hunt down all the enemy towns even after you are already very powerful. In fairness, though, most of the campaign scenarios from Triumph Studios are the same way.

Balance: 4
If you can get through the first few turns -- with the Black Dragon dead, and capturing both a power node and a mine without too many losses, then the rest is pretty easy. I had to re-do the first six turns a few times before I got it right, then the rest of the game was rather easy. It is easy to rebuild King's Nobury and even easier to defend it, because there are no enemies anywhere nearby. There are Independent Guards at various points which are pretty tough, but if your army stays together you can knock them off one at a time. One of your enemies is bottled up by mountains and a stack of independent Dread Lords; the other is far across the map. Your starting position is much better than theirs and you have many turns to build up, capture all the special places on your half of the map, and do lots of quests before having to fight the enemy AI wizards. It is even easier if you exploit the Volun Tree but I think that is a bug not by design (see below).

Creativity: 4
It has some good ideas for events -- such as having to defend King's Nobury at all costs; and lots of puns for the hero and wizard and Town names. (Yahu for vs Hot Male for; likewise for the heros.) But it doesn't all come together, and King's Nobury would be more interesting if there were some real challeges to defend it.

Map Design: 3
The above-ground part is OK, with a nice variety and a fairly logical geography that influences strategy. But I don't like the underground; it is completely illogical and hard to see how to get around, and you can't tell where the caves go to or come from. The only way to use the caves is to save and reload a lot. And there is a lot of stuff that you can see but have no way to get to.

Besides the underground, the other big problem with map is that the AI wizards are blocked off from you, so you have a very long time to build up and become very powerful before having to fight the AI players.

Story/Instructions: 2
I think it has a story but I didn't understand what it was about; just some random puns and unconnected events.

Additional Comments:
There is a bug in the events, or else a bad play-balance problem. The Volun Tree is set to "Always" spawn refugee units when you enter the area, and you can get several powerful units every turn if you have a couple of units dedicated to running back and forth to spawn the units and recruit them.

Overall, this is a decent map from an experienced designer. The quality and overall feel, as well as the difficulty and the playing time, is quite a lot like that of the original maps in the Aow2 campaign, plus a few puns and special events.
