Eight races are ready to conquer the world. This world is full of quests, treasures and relicts former civilizations have left after they disappeared. So watch out for strange looking places across the map - sometimes a quest might be hidden there! Try to accomplish the quests and the reward is yours. There are also several set items hidden across the map. The extention (x/y) behind the item name will identify the item as a set item. Try to collect all items of one set and bring the complete set to the BLACKSMITH. He will create for every complete set that is braught to his hut a powerful unique item.
There is no storyline you have to follow. Just go out and develop your own strategy. It is up to you.

Map is interesting to play because of good cities location. There are not very many sites and I like this very much. Landscape plays important role in strategy. And you can receive a lot of fun with custom quests.
Balance: 5
Perfect balance is not reachable. But I do not care about this. However, the map is not easy for AI, I think first player (humans) would not have any difficulties.
Creativity: 5
There are many new interesting ideas and interesting implementations.
Map Design: 5
Excellent. Each mine is placed in appropriate place.
Story/Instructions: 5
A lot of custom quests and items.
Additional Comments:
I had been waiting this map since I bought Age of Wonders Shadow Magic. And I am waiting for new map. |

I have played the map in single and multi player mode. My friends and myself had a lot a fun for several games. The conditions for the players are quite balanced all over the game.
Balance: 5
Over all equal. If you select one of the shadow races winning might be easier.
Creativity: 5
Many new ideas (items quests unexpected incidentes).
Map Design: 5
Different harmoniseded sceneries do make exploring exciting.
Story/Instructions: 5
No story, but isn´t really needed. The quests tell their own stories.
Additional Comments:
Mabey one of the best maps I have ever played. Great fun at all.

definitely the maximum size for an amd 2000 processor with only 256 mb ram, but what a fun!
Balance: 5
pay attention when trying to occupy a hostile capitol: every player gets a 8-monsters-army, when danger's near his home city.
Creativity: 5
many quests and nice buildings (i love the brewery). you can collect about 8 different sets of items and when 1 set is complete, you get an unique item after bringing ist to the blacksmith's hut - very good idea for hero-tuning.
Map Design: 5
very nice landscape all over on this map
Story/Instructions: 5
not always the same lord-of-the-rings-stuff, some funny episodes in the quests.
Additional Comments: the best map i ever played.

Awesome map. I havent played AOW2 for a few month now, but still got hooked by this one for a few hours.
The quests are amazing and the map is beautifully designed. I gave map design 4.5 because I think the
shadow land is a bit flat and could apply a big
more touch up. Nevertherless, I dont really like
shadow land anyway - a failure concept of AOW SM. |

Initially, I was not going to try this map for single player because the author writes that this is no story line. And, while this is technically true, there are plenty of quests and triggers that give the game a story as it unfolds.
This is a terrific map. I've only played it with one race so far, but I can easily see myself replaying it. It looks like it would be great for multi player as well. There are plenty of unique places and structures, but not so much detail that the game get's bogged down. Starting conditions seem fair for all sides, as each was fairly built up by the time I encountered them.
I can't comment on all the races, but playing the Syrons has been a lot of fun. The quests are interesting and relevant and, happily, optional!
As I noted earlier, the story line develops as you play the game. I certainly had a good sense of my character and race. And the great thing is that the story line can change with each game you play due to the variety of quests and puzzles on the map. When a quest is given, instructions on how to complete it are fairly clear but not so explicit that I feel like I'm reading a "how to" manual. The blacksmith idea is a terrific one, although I was loath to trade in some of my items (they seemed good enough as they were).
I am still playing this very innovative, interesting, and creative map. Great job![Edited on 07/07/04 @ 09:19 PM]

Loads of fun! I really got into item collecting in this game, for obvious reasons. Everyone loves quests, and they are VERY abundant here. The only reason I didn't give a five here is because as much as I enjoyed it, I really have no desire to replay it. I felt I experienced it pretty much fully in one play.
Balance: 4
Deffinately plenty of challenges here. The author's description states that all sides are balanced and from what I experienced that seems to be true, though I only played one side. My only complaint is that it could have been more challenging in single player. I completed a lot of quests and the rewards gave me a huge advantage, while the computer players didn't touch any of the more involved and rewarding ones.
Creativity: 5
By far, one of the most creative scenarios I've ever played. The item sets alone make this puppy stand out, but the quests! Not only are there TONS of quests, but they are unlike any I've seen before. Some of them are very involved, but the more complicated ones give out some REALLY juicy rewards.
Map Design: 4
Quite lovely and very spacious. I love a big map. While nothing really makes this one exceptional, it is clear that a lot of effort was put into it and the result is an attractive landscape and a quality map.
Story/Instructions: 4
No real storyline here. Quest instructions are quite clear, in most cases. There was one that I would like to comment on, but it contains a spoiler. I'm adding it at the end of the review.
Additional Comments:
This is a good map and is very easy to get sucked in. The quests are what did it for me. Again, the set items are a very nice enhancement.
THE FOLLOWING CONTAINS A SPOILER!
Note to the author:
One little bug I found. When doing the quest to rebuild the broken towers that correspond to the nodes, someone cast life mastery or something and changed all the dead nodes to live trees that were owned by that wizard. I could not walk over them to capture them and it made things much more difficult. I don't know if the quest would have still worked if I continued, but I gave up because I had no idea which towers I still needed to find or if what I was doing was working. Unfortunately, this also caused me to lose all my heroes, as they were the ones that were on that quest. That was another problem which I think is intentional, but still bugged me real bad... I know there's a warning about having to finish the quest to get out, but how can one anticipate that the quest would wind up taking like 100 turns and wouldn't even involve the people you sent into the cave? I know, I'm sure you meant it to be that way... but I just about threw my keyboard. :o( |
