You can choose between 8 fractions in a battle for ancient Europe: Romans (Humans), Celts (Elves), Carthaginians (Dark Elves), Greeks (Arhonts), Teutons (Orcs), Persians (Tigrans), Huns (Goblins), and Finns* (Frostlings). Starting conditions are unequal: “Civilized” Mediterranean nations obviously have some advantages. But the population density and lack of space would force them to fight each other soon, while “barbarians” of the North have more time to research powerful magic and build their armies. You can “model” Greek colonization of Mediterrania and wars with Persia; Punic wars, Caesar’s Gaelic campaign, growth of Roman empire, and finally the great removal of peoples and crush of ancient world.
* - this fraction can be replaced by the Slavs (Halflings) fraction, which is now unplayable because of the wizards number limit

camelrider Download! Highly recommended!
Beautiful landscape covers the somewhat accurate european terrain, and poor starting positions
lays ground for a long and interesting game,
where even small units count.
camelrider Oh, the AI don't know what boats are, since the game was released incomplete. That's a big problem since one of the factions start on an island...

Additional Comments:I love this map after!
I created a land bridge at the Rock of Gibraltar for the Cartaginians and for the orcs to get into play, otherwise they just sit in their areas, and in the Orcs' case that was just one Island city. Each race has a boat but the AI doesn't use them, so if they're cut off by water they just tend to sit there. The Persians to, but when they create theflying lions (Gryphons)? They tend to join the fray. Playing Romans, humans, the Greek Archons are wicked on emperor level, or King. PS Elves built level four dragons and Orcs built level 4 Gulpers-2. This map is especially notable for its accuracy in depicting geography of the area.

I liked the map very much, first because of it's originality, second because it is historical, and also because it's very real, the countries are very well defined, and it makes you want to play it again and again...

I liked this map very much. One thing thou if you start out as the Tuetons man you are behind the eight ball. Also the Black Forest could use a few more roads. Man that forest sucked trying to move into and out of it.

But over all great Map. Rome and Greece start out with advantages. Which is to be expected I think. If you really want a challenge as I said pick the Teutons! But historical and realy good work.

This review comes from the now closed site aow2battleground.com. My review system there was a bit different, but I've tried to translate the ratings as good as I can.

Map author : Yore, Map size : XL, Rating : 54,7%

Another Europe map, the best I've seen so far. The layout is almost an exact copy of Europe, and the details are beautiful. The wizards are named after ancient european civilizations and sometimes you get the feeling that you're playing Civ 3... :) . The experienced players might want to set the difficulty a bit higher than the preset Squire, or perhaps choose a wizard that's located somewhere in the middle of the map.
This map is kind of cool, but in single play it gets a little boring without a story.

Balance : 5
Ok, but when playing some wizards you can quickly produce a lot of level-4 creatures and become invincible.

Graphic details : 10
Really good details all over the map.

Story/Instructions : 1
None

Customization : 3
Only the wizards.

Creativity : 7
To create this layout takes some time I guess, but as said before, much more fun things can be done with a Europe map than just the layout. One of the wizards is trapped on an island because the AI doesn't use boats. Some playtesting might have prevented that.

Fun : 6
It's ok to play for a while, but when playing single player on an XL map you really need a story to stay interested.

Good map - doesn't need a big story ... history tells it! It is up to you to change it.

rat_peddler A decent map. No reason to rate as the existing ratings sum up to about what I'd give it. Maybe some current comments will draw attention to an oldie, but not a moldie.

It was funny how history seemed to play out. Maybe geography is everything as one of my history teachers liked to say.
