Soggy Boots is a small map, designed and tested for an enjoyable, balanced 1-on-1 game.
I've always enjoyed a quick and dirty romp on War of the Dale; however, I've had a hard time finding many other Small maps that provide an enjoyable 1-on-1 experience. Soggy Boots is my small attempt to remedy the situation, as well as my first submission to AoW2Heaven. :) Two opposing wizards, each with a small village in the highlands, must slog through the thick of a lush (but gooey) morass in search of land and resources; thus the title. :)
The map is strategically symmetrical, and resources have been tweaked towards the low end to avoid quick build-up and to promote planning. Full wizard customization is allowed; heroes are the standard library with the draconian heroes removed; items are 100% redone (I have a personal library of self-made items which I use to replace the standard item library on my maps).
There are no events or attached story; the map is designed for ease of use and is geared toward online MP play. However, the limited resources can make the map quite challenging for single-player vs. an Emperor opponent (I suggest Karissa as the computer player).
Any feedback or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. :) |

One could say I am sucker for interesting names and with the name "Soggy Boots", this one seemed catchy to me. So needless to say I gave it a try and if you reallllly want a quick "one on one" game then go for it. However I feel this map needs more added to it. Furthermore because this map is relatively new and apparently the designer's first map, I am providing only a written review and without any scoring. Also I feel that this map has good potential here which is why I am writing this review.
First of all the designer "Dwiggs" (by the way cool author name) seems quite conscientious about having this map limited from building massive forces therefore being a challenge. With only five cities on the entire map, I feel it is too limited. I would have preferred at least 4 or 3 more. Also these additional cities could be placed underground since the underground level is non existent with this map. (What no underground, how's the Shadowolfe suppose to run away and hide if the going gets tough... please... just a few caves. ) There are alot of mountainous areas so a few caves with some paths would only add more dimension for additional attacking points. As it stands now the battling is too confined.
The terrain looks great. Nice swamp feel in the middle but maybe the roads should be "lost" so you are forced to trek through the, how you put it, "gooeiness"? The overall layout with some "places" requiring a boat to get to may not be appealing to some, maybe a few shoreline paths could be added. Things like that usually just wont be explored when your already limited armies need to be on gaurd or enroute to attack the enemy.
Finally I just want to say again that this map has good potential. The designer did take the time to create a customized library of items. One particular item I really liked is the new version of the "Chicken Shield". I have always liked this item, it's simply just great to grin at not to mention the great boost of 4 to your defenses! Anyway "Dwiggysan" (oriental version of the name... no, not really just sounded cool too...) renames the item as the "Dancing Chicken Shield". It has a much less defense bonus but get this, the "Taunt" ability was added to it, how appropiate! Just think about it. There you are against let us say some really bad dude and you are hiding behind this shield going, "C'mon big guy try and hit me... oh you missed me... c'mon c'mon try again... bokkkk bok bok bok bokkkkk (the sound a chicken makes)".
As I said earlier, I am use to a map with a little bit more and should there be a revision of this map, I'll keep a watch on it. Now that "AOW Shadow Magic" has come available, time is an issue. Anyhow, I like the direction taking with this map ("keeping it simple") and here's to maybe "Soggier Boots"!
