Well, I won this on turn 7. I wonder if the map maker knows how I did it? No cheats, just tactics.

I think I know what "cheat" you mean. I advice everyone to play this map with simultaneous turns, then I think it will be harder to do what you did... (how fun is it to cheat in single player anyway?!? :p )
Thanks for posting a review though![Edited on 06/09/03 @ 10:31 AM]

So who the heck is Warald you might ask? I think he's good ole Belendor's twin brother, cousin or something like that... Anyway, if the title of this scenario may not sound all that interesting, I think that you will find this to be one little single player map worth digging your fangs into... drroool slurp bite hmmmmmm pretty good!
Playability: 4
A very playable map. It was alot of fun and was interesting throughout the game. A little word of advice, if you are someone who enjoys playing with the use of heroes then you will love this scenario. If not...what do you mean you don't... hey everyone, we got an anti-hero here... lets get 'em! What I am saying here is that with the way this scenario is intended to play, it is not the kind where you control a domain and build forces. Instead you find or should I also say "wait" for units to help along with your quest. By the way, I would do what the map maker says... especially at the beginning with the "five days" thing. (I will explain more on this later!) Overall the map played well and with no bugs, yeaaa no bugs! However, because this is a "one-way" scenario, the replayability factor suffers.
Balance: 5
Outstanding! Great mixture of some easy and some reallllly hard battles! (Ex. "Sheza name Sezana witha fivea blacka robed menas!") One little thing I like to add is that along the way, a few potential battles/encounters are for attacking at your OWN discretion. I liked this alot because it works great for those who think they have big kanunas while allowing a good balance for players differing in skills and experience.
Creativity: 4
Cats, Elves, a Dwarf and even a Frosty all fighting together for the same cause... heck yes, sounds like alot of fun to me. Neat concept for a scenario however nothing too out of the ordinary. Also the map plays too straightforward which causes it to lack replayability, therefore limited creativity. The customized heroes and items are terrific. I especially loved the simple fact that the "Shoulder Cannon" was changed to the "Fire Machine"! (I always thought the "Shoulder Cannon" was a ridiculous item. Although it's nice to have but how does one (a hero) become able to just simply put a "cannon" on the shoulder when the other real cannon unit is a chore to build and move around!) Anyway the creator of this map has definite talent here, keep up the good work!
Map Design: 5
Wow I was just dumbfounded! The designer of this map did an outstanding job here! The terrain looked well organized and had a sense of belonging. The "entryway" to the "memorial stones/graves" is just incredible. Excellent use of the "tactical map" graphics, how do you do it! A couple of minor things I like to add (actually wonder about) concerns the underground areas. There are magic relays at the map edges in the northwest section, why they are there I wasn't too sure, I guess maybe for looks however it looked corny. Also "Sezana's army" is gaurding a bridge across a stream of lava however the "lava" can be crossed near the right pillars. I am not sure if this was planned but it seemed odd and what's the point of the gaurding of the bridge? Of course I did not mind because I lost three heroes in attacking her and her army and said "Screw this I'm going around!" Hey who said that... Shadowolfe not afraid just a little cautious yeah that's it...cautious.
Story/Instructions: 5
So do you remember earlier about me telling about the "five days" thing. Lets put it this way... I was like "so the map maker says wait five days". Well Shadowolfe doesn't like to wait so... needless to say Shadowolfe's fur was let us say burnt, electrocuted, frozen, infested, cursed and of course blessed but not in a good way. DON'T CROSS THE BRIDGE! Of course after day five you can...but then again. :) What do I have to say about all this...duh, follow instructions! The author does a very good job with this part as well as providing a satisfying story.
One thing I do wish there could have been more of in regards to the story's entertainment is dialogue among the heroes. Although this would have been a challenge because the storylines would have to be dependent on what heroes remained alive, I think it would of given much "fun along the way". Think about it, with eight heroes all on a quest together, it would have been great to hear them cackling about like a bunch of hens! (Remember the "along the way" dialogues of the characters in the "Lord of the Rings" movies... the hobbits talking about the different "eating times" and the dwarf about dwarven women...?) Anyway I like scenarios with interesting stories especially humorous ones, just thought it would be a worthwhile idea. Oh yeah, seeing the "Orcish Impaler" in the stack among the Rift Lords and the other "biggies" was how I should say "What the heck is an Impaler doing there with those guys? His he suppose to be in charge or is he their waterboy!" Funny!
Additional Comments:
Here we go again with a d d i t i o n a l comments. Not much more to say. This is a very good single player scenario which deserves checking out! One thing I would like to add that in regards to the other past review about this scenario, one should overlook the fact that yes, you can win this scenario in five days or so however it is not how the designer of this map intended it to be played. (The trick is to cast a Dire Boar to lure the "stack" away from gaurding the "ruined city" which allows for the Pioneer to do it's "thing". There, now you know which does nothing to take away from the true goal of this scenario...to have fun!) Also I would like to say that a comment was also made about playing the scenario in "simultaneous turns" mode however I feel this should always be the choice of the player playing the scenario just like the level of difficulty for the computer player(s). Everyone's different... skills, techniques, game knowledge, experience and of course just style of play. As for me, Shadowolfe... I'm not telling you... you'll just make fun of me. However I did try this scenario in the "classic turns" mode and it played just fine. Bottom line, I had fun!

Shadowolfe here...
Oooops, I need to correct something I said in the past scenario review regarding the "Shoulder Cannon" comment. A friend pointed it out that it wasn't the "Shoulder Cannon" but the "Dwarven Flamer" which was switched to the "Fire Machine". I totally mixed the two up, sorry, my apologies. Blame it on "red eyes"! ;) Thanks!

Just 1 party to lead: how can it be easier to play ?
Balance: 5
Don't worry if you lose some of your heroes....there are a lot of elven reinforcements just before the final battles.
Creativity: 4
Nice idea a game focused just on one 8 heroes party without city management
Map Design: 5
Looks pretty indeed.
Story/Instructions: 4
Perhaps the mapmaker should advice not to use the wagon underground to rebuild the razed windmill there, but to hold it to rebuild the razed city on the surface once the heroes free it of monsters.
Additional Comments:
I had 2 hours of enjoyment playing this game.My thanks to the author.

Great! Fast and easy to play.
Balance: 5
Also very well done. The battles are interesting but don't require constant reloads.
Creativity: 4
It has a story and some good character backgrounds, and the wizards-off design is nice too. But it is fairly simple story.
Map Design: 4
Nice job, making good use of the area in a small map and good terrain detail. But the end-game victory condition is broken. I captured the last city and freed Enold, but was told that I need to rebuild that city. Rebuild it with what? This takes a pioneer, and the map told me to destroy all three of the cities that I captured so there is noplace to build a pioneer. Enold had a pioneer with him at that start, but there is a destroyed mine and furnace next to him and a negative cash flow, so the sensible thing to do is to use the pioneer to rebuild the furnace or mine. That not only gives income from the mine, but it saves the maintenance on the pioneer. Not until the end did I find that I was supposed to have kept that pioneer in reserve -- I didn't notice any hints about that.
Story/Instructions: 4
It has a good story, but it could be more elaborate than it is, with more events and more character development.
Additional Comments:
Highly recommended, and well worth an evening or two of your time! This is a good example of a small, story-driven single player map, which I've also tried to do in my own map design MIDDLE-EARTH IN THE FIRST AGE: QUEST OF EARENDIL although that is a little bigger than WARALD'S QUEST is. |

Very playable. Anyone who knows a bit about the game can find their way easily here.
Balance: 4
Most of the time my heroes owned the day, but maybe I'm just too good ;)
Creativity: 5
Excellent work here. A band of heroes doing what a band of heroes should do works very well in with me. I especially loved the mix, which somehow reminded me of my party in IceWind Dale, but that's another story.
Map Design: 5
You must have spent a lot of time on this one. Flawless for what it does.
Story/Instructions: 3
Not much story to read, but suitable for the scenario. "Save the Wizard!" is good enough a cause not to waste everyone's time with pointless history.
Additional Comments:
Thanks a zillion for the scenario. Loved every bit of it.
Finished it with all my heroes alive, but the darkelf girl died on the last battle. Maybe if I replayed it... |

Too easy but may be worth playing again to see how much "easier" it can get.
Balance: 2
Like the first review said, can beat it easily.
Creativity: 3
It's fine but nothing special.
Map Design: 3
Again nothing special.
Story/Instructions: 3
Not much of a storyline.
Additional Comments:
Thought I'd play a quick game with a small map. This one finishes real quick. Will try others later. Hopefully will be better than this one. |

Playability: 5
well as others have mentioned it really is playable.easy to explore and survive
Balance: 5
I always try not to lose any of my heroes even if they are lvl 1 so when Spectres and shades attacked my party after kings valley I had to play reload several times ^_^ and also in the dragons lair i had to retreat then strike back
in short well balanced for not greedy players :D
Creativity: 5
different races are perfect for creativity
although i would like a have a draconian warrior.also i liked the sprit guarding the
valley a nice twist.
Map Design: 5
a smal map really suits the story.it does not prolong days al least.desing is almost perfect although i would expect more item possibility in the kings valley.
Story/Instructions: 4
story is lacking a little warnings and conversations but still servers its purpose.
Additional Comments:
thanks for this great map i really enjoyed it.i am looking forward if you make another map.
PS:i am not a native english speaker so plz forgive me if I made mistakes. |
