One of the most famous episodes of "The Silmarillion". Fingon, forgetting his quarrels with the sons of Fëanor, decides to assault Morgoth's fortress at Thangorodrim and free Maedhros from the tortures of the Dark Enemy.
This is my second version of the module, now completely in english. I've introduced some changes in order to keep the game more balanced. Hope you enjoy it ;) |

Playability: 5
Perfect, I had a lot of fun with this. A small two-wizard map is a refreshing change from all the big XL maps that I've been playing lately (including my own 2nd Age map). Play moves fast, yet there are enough quests and stuff to always keep it interesting.
Balance: 5
I won in 27 turns and had to reload saved games a couple of times. It's not one of the toughest maps but it's challenging enough to be an interesting single-player game and in line with most of the AoW2 campaign missions.
Creativity: 4
At last, a good Silmarillion map for AoW2! The designer did a good job of fitting Tolkien into the AoW2 system, having an interesting game while still being reasonably faithful to Tolkien. The quests are nice, including the use of the Valars' names in the Spirit Quests.
Map Design: 4
This is a depiction of just the northern sections of Beleriand, of Thangorodrim and the bordering lands. This is not a super-detailed map that has three kinds of terrain in every hex, but it gets the job done.
Story/Instructions: 5
The fact that it is based on well-developed existing characters and story is a big advantage for those of us who have read The Silmarillion, but it is just a normal map for those who haven't. The quests and events are within the spirit of the book and it more interesting. I could recognize some but not all of the character names -- not sure if the other characters were ones that the author added or ones from the story that I forgot.
Additional Comments:
Despite the author's comments, it is still not "entirely" in English -- the item names, wizard descriptions, and a few other things are still in Spanish. But this is OK, I didn't have any trouble understanding anything although I don't know Spanish. (Like an item "Cote de Mithril"...) One thing that I would change is to not have so many Nymphs -- when I played, my army had lots of Orcs who had been seduced by Nymphs. This looses some of the Tolkien feel; nothing like that could have happened in the book. Another minor point is that the quest to fight Ungoliant's lair promises a magic sword that I already had at that time. And the magic ring Nenya shouldn't exist -- this is Galadriel's ring that was forged later in the middle of the Second Age. But these are minor quibbles -- this is a great little map that is a blast to play!

This english version is a bit more challenging than the spanish I played before (there's still some spanish in it though...), but it's still quite easy to win.
Since I'm no Tolkien freak I don't know if items/heroes etc are close to Tolkiens work, but having played most of the other Middle earth maps around I think this is one of the most playable ones.
Some events and spirit quests are nicely scripted as well.

Playability: 5
There are not many race options, but the Elves are pretty fun :-) The map loads easily and there are no machine bogging additions such as strong currents, flapping guards, etc. One has to build up pretty quickly, as the computer (on Emperor) will be sending heros and their henchmen to end your career.
Balance: 4
The computer opponent seems adequately provided with troops and resources, although the map is not difficult to win. Probably the computer player should get a bit more help.
Creativity: 4
There are some nice events (units joining, guards springing out to greet one, etc), and it's fun to play a non Lord of the Rings Tolkien episode :-)
Map Design: 3
The map is pretty plain, although the spacing of units, cities, structures, makes for good playability. But those who demand rich details, or even token eye candy, will not be much impressed.
Story/Instructions: 2
The story is, apparently, somewhere in the Simarillon, although I can't tell you just where, and neither does the designer. There is no story and scant directions (although few are really needed) included with this map.
Additional Comments: This map went quickly, but despite the fairly light level of competition, I enjoyed it. The computer opponent is reasonably agressive and there are enough events to hold the player's interest. More of a story and a few more topographical additions to the map (to increase the difficulty of the player's task as well as to provide some visual stimulation) are recommended. Good job!
