A major upgrade from version 1.0 based on many more hours of research in Tolkien's books and within maps and encyclopedias which analyse ME. But this scenario does not have the pretense of being a faithful rendition of the War of the Ring: it is an imperfect interpretation, with a more conform map (taking into account the limitations of AoW2's rules & editor).

Playability: 4
Much improved from the earlier versions, and much more manageable than the "Lord of the Rings" map of "the nihilist" or Freya's "Middle Earth XL". It would be better if the author would decide for sure if it were a single player map or multi-player -- I'm giving it a high rating because it should work pretty well as a multiplayer map.

Balance: 4
The map notes say that it is both Single-Player and Multi-player -- I disagree. I think that is very good and well balanced for multi-player with all eight sides being roughly equal, but much less balanced for single player. As a single player map, it is boring to take only Aragon, Gandalf, or the Elves, but too easy if you play all three of them.

Creativity: 3
The basic arrangement of the sides follows that of the older AoW2 Middle Earth maps, which in turn follow the AoW maps: eight sides battling for control of Middle Earth, but not attempting to portray the exact events of the War of the Ring. But it has some good ideas, such as having the ring abstracted as a victory condition.

Map Design: 5
Beautiful and well designed, greatly improved over earlier versions. And it is much harder to make a beautiful map that is accurate to its source material than it is to make a beautiful mao from scratch. Arcana has a good commitment to making improvements and this shows.

Story/Instructions: 4
I love all the signs. The map has some events and instructions which help bring the story to life. But it has some errors also, such as some words from other fictional universes ("Mentat" which is from Dune, and "Lost Sith Temple" which is from Star Wars.)

Additional Comments:
1. The password protection is still annoying.
2. It needs more Heroes and less Wizards. Many important characters of Lord of the Rings are missing (unless I just didn't play enough to see them): Galadriel, Celeborn, Merry, Pippin, Legolas, and others. But on the other hand, I don't see the point in putting in new wizards who are not based on Tolkien just so that you can have eight of them. I know, you want to have all of the map being used and the play balance right. But I'd rather see more accuracy to Tolkien even a slight cost in play balance.
3. The Magic items are too powerful.
4. The Haradrim should be Humans, not Dark Elves. "Corsair Queen of Umbar"-- hmmm, maybe OK if you really need to have this for play balance; multiplayer balance would be messed up if you give them all to Sauron. But at least make the units the correct race.
5. The Dwarves are evil and are allies of Sauron??? And Gimli is their main hero?
6. The underground caverns are still too extensive for my tastes; according to my interpretation of Tolkien they should be just in a few places such as Moria and the Paths of the Dead not honeycombs under all of Middle Earth. But that is just my idea.

In summary, this is the best of several AoW2 maps which are eight-player XL maps showing the general situation of Middle Earth at the time of the War of the Ring.
