This is a huge map with 8 playable races, all of which have any where from 2-4 starting locations. The AI will often choose different starting locations - making for great replayability. This map has been used for both Single Player and Multiplayer.

I made maps for AoW like Return of the Dread Lord and Coming of the Dread Lord etc.

I wish there were more maps like this.

The map is very straightforward and effective for multiplayer games in terms of design. My heart jumped a bit when I opened it up in the editor and looked around. We can find areas being connected to each other in various ways and this provides for a very open ended type of game. There are long mountain ranges, rivers and lakes, underground narrow tunnels, deep forests as well as swamps and open areas!

What is very interesting is the idea of variable starting positions (something that we saw in the PBEM Tournament as well) because it makes for great replayability, but also for uncertainty as to where your opponents will be (which is a very cool element to have in non-random maps).

Anyway, it's almost like a VERY VERY interesting random map.

Great submission and I am sure this map will be played much.

Once it becomes more popular, please consider really making it something special by, for example, providing customized heroes, a bit more detail and variability in areas, and bit fewer woods (having means to transverse woods really is a big advantage on surface). Stuff like this, fine tuning!

Oh, and most importantly, you do know there is an unofficial patch v14, right?

I actually DIDN'T know about the 1.4 patch.

I haven't touched AoW:SM in years and then my best friend decided to fly in from Arizona and said "Let's fire up AoW:SM and play one of your maps" ... which got me on here looking around as I took a break from "tweaking" this map for our soon to arrive gaming fiesta.

I have a lot of catching up to do... lol. Which is a good thing. I can't believe AoW (the original) still has active stuff going on.... amazing.

This game (AoW:SM) is probably one of my top 3 games of all time.... wish they'd make a AoW 3.

You'd better download v14, then. It also adds a lot of new content. Its not AoW3, but some have said it is close...
rat_peddler Or really go for it and use the BNW 3.2 Modpack. That is even closer to an AOW3.

Plus BNW 3.2 seems to be better balanced for what the AI can handle. The flyers are not quiet as dominant and are more balanced. At least that is my impression.

I am playing this map and am enjoying it. I really like many of the signs that add good flavor to the game.

If people have time I would appreciate feedback on the different races - any that feel incredibly easy? Anthing in the map that unbalances MP play? Thoughts?

Very basic play. Build an empire, attack the others.

Balance: 3
Fine all over I guess

Nothing to write home about

No special terrain, no area guards, no custom wizards, no custom items or heroes.

Story/Instructions: 3
No events, no leaders, nothing in game.

Additional Comments:
I'm sorry, but this is not a great map. Decent perhaps, but all 5's - no.
Change to 1.4 patch, add a bunch of special sites and tombs and custom stuff and it would be ok / better. It is a simple case of building the biggest army first. It doesnt need to be overdone - like some of mine perhaps - but it needs more of everything - even just to make the terrain look prettier and give more defined pointers to go along. The start point is the only thing that is a good thing, but all that means is that you send one troop through each and start in many different points. You may as well have just given a city in each of those points.

Please dont be discouraged here, just look through some of the other maps rated above 4.5 and see what they have. It doesnt have to have an in depth story, or a thousand events, but you have to bring the player into the map and give challenges every turn for at least the first 15 days. After that it becomes player on player action that no one can duplicate or fake!! :)

nyarlathotep Except for there being no custom wizards, heroes or items, I find this a very good map.

I hate to think how much mastery spells there will be used later on in the game though, with all those specialist wizards. That's one of the things which should definately change.
